Baby Names Based on Astrology

I don't have children yet, and when I do, I will doubt that I will name them based on their astrological sign.

I don't know much about astrology, but I do know a lot about names.

Here's a a quick review of the astrological signs and some info about them, if you don't know this stuff.  I got this chart from this website.

One of my favorite things about this chart is that it gives you some ideas to consider if you want to choose a name that is significant to the zodiac.  For example, you can use a name that reflects the element of the sign (eg. "Terra" is an earth name, so it would be appropriate for an earth sign).  You can also use the personality traits or planets to derive names of significance; maybe pick a name with a meaning that reflects the personality traits of specific astrological signs.  

This page also offers some suggested beginnings for names that would "bring luck" to kids born during this time.

I like names.  I like the freedom of names that's reigned in by the pattern of it all.  I like name guidelines, but I also like the ability to choose that names allow.  This is kind of a useless post.  I guess it's just kind of a "for your information" kind of situation.  I like names.  I guess that's it.  I have an obsession with names.

I recently posted this about my name obsession.  I love names.  I have Asperger's Syndrome and, characteristic of Asperger's Syndrome, I make lists and I have strange passions.  My first passion was names.  Making lists of names has been my passion since before kindergarten.

I collected a bunch of "new" names recently into a list of over a thousand names, and thought I'd pick out 50 of the top female and male names that really stand out to me from that list.  I posted a handful of each here, but of course a handful of names is never enough for me.

If you like this list, there are a thousand others where this one came from.  I think in this one, I'm trying to hilight "weird" names, names that are different from my traditional style.  In this list, I've included names that are abnormal to me.  In this list, I've included names I rarely hear.  I've included surnames.  I've included unique spellings that I like.  I've included a lot of one-syllable names.  I've included a lot of Biblical and historically-inspired names.  

Does anyone know of a good site where I can have access to loads of unique names -- names like these -- so that I can further broaden my knowledge?

Recent Name List With Some New Interesting Names

This is ten pages of a name list I started a few days ago.

This is the Microsoft Word transcription of the list.  On Excel, it's 214 columns with rows filled out to L.  Does that mean anything to you?  Probably not.  But to me, that's something.  To me, that's kind of important.

Of course, those are some kind of random names - some weird ones, some wonderful ones, some made-up ones, and some very old ones.  I love each one of those names for very different reasons, but I adore them all because of the way they sound.  I don't think I, myself, would use any of these names for a child, but they're nice to think about.  They're nice-sounding names.

"Unique Baby Names"

I love names and I'm always looking to learn more about them.

My quandary is this: I cannot find a good, recent source of "new" names.

I tend to enjoy "baby name" sites because they usually include long lists of names that I can scan through and pick the ones I like the most.

But right now, it looks like I've already heard all of the names.

I'm really craving new names for my brain.

My mission right now is to find a new website that lists unique baby names, a website that I haven't already analyzed.

My Favorite Names (Part 3)

This is the third in a series of posts I've been doing simply because I have Asperger's Syndrome and I love names (everything about them) and wanted to see if anyone else in Internet-Land had any interest in me listing my favorites.

Today, I'm sharing my favorites ranked between 600-900 on the SSA's 2012 baby name list.

I love that most of these names have such interesting histories that have contributed to their position on this list.  So many of these names are commonly associated with popular culture figures or characters in popular fiction or television and their presence in that medium have contributed to their popularity among new parents.  Shiloh, for example, hadn't made the list in 100 years until it skyrocketed to 788 in 2007 (and has since been hovering around 600 on the list) -- this, of course, is so incredibly influenced by the choice of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie to name their daughter Shiloh.  Pitt and Jolie's Shiloh was born in 2006, so it's no coincidence that her relatively unheard-of name suddenly became popular the following year.

My Favorite Names (Part 1)

This is my favorite website.  This, in fact, has been my favorite website for YEARS.  I can remember loving this site when I was 12 years old, sitting on our family computer at the kitchen desk, memorizing the top 1000 names in the USA for each year.

I linked above to the 2012 list, but you can access the entire archived list from here.  My mother doesn't understand the purpose of this list; she can't fathom who would be interested in it, other than me.  I don't think the Social Security Administration was thinking of an Autistic pre-teen girl in Canada with a great obsession with names who could stare at this list for hours and hours on end when it came up the idea to post it online.  Regardless, I'm happy that this resource is so easily accessible on the internet.  Because I like names, I like statistics, and I like lists, so this is pretty much the perfect companion to my Autistic obsession.

My favorites right now?  This is my list of favorite masculine names (categorized between 1-300 on th 2012 list).  The numbers correspond with their placement on the 2012 list.  I wrote this list out by memory yesterday and got a few of the numbers a bit off but I think I've corrected it.  I have other favorites, but they're all after 300.

The funny thing about me and names is that I love them in many ways.  I love the prevalence of certain names.  I love the etymology of names.  I like the reasons certain names are popular and certain names are unpopular and how those statistics are dependent on what part of the world the statistics are taken from.  I love the way each of these names have changed in popularity over the years.

"Phoebe," for example, was 433 on the list in 1915 but decreased in popularity until, in 1957, it was practically unheard of and didn't even make the top 1000 list for many years.  In 1993, before Friends, Phoebe was ranked 903rd in popularity in the United States and had been increasing slowly and steadily since it reentered the list in 1989.  However, in 1995, as Friends began to peak in popularity, it jumped to number 581 on the list and has continued to increase pretty steadily since then.

That's fascinating to me.

My Calming Secret & My Autistic Obsession

I like making name lists.  I don't know why.  I like it.  I just like names and it really calms me down to write lists of names.

In the last few days, I've written 328 lines that look like the above snapshot.

I know it's random.  I know it's weird.  But names calm me down.  I've been making lists of names since before I started grade school and I've always found that they ground me.  I can write a name list for hours and hours on end but now I'm trying to limit myself to only a few hours in the morning.  It's worked pretty well so far.  I'm not too stressed at the moment so I can manage that pretty well.

Special Interests, Part II

I'm sharing my special interests again!  And that one special interest that far exceeds the rest?  My love of names, of course!
I like names.  When I'm having a tough day, it really helps me to write a list of names.  I have an organizational structure for it.
I like coming up with names.  I like grouping names that sound good together into "families."  I like pairing first, middle, and last names.  I like the patterns and shapes that the letters make when they fit perfectly together into a nice-sounding name.

Here is one of the name lists I've been working on.  It's an extensive list that groups thousands of full names into combinations of 2 parents and five children.  I also detail pronunciations and nicknames.

I like names. 

Special Interests

It's hard to explain "special interests" to neurotypical individuals.  Sometimes, it's even hard to explain special interests to other Autistics.
But I keep saying I'll post about my special interests.  So here goes:
I have a few special interests.  I don't normally call them "special interests" though. They're just a part of me.  It's hard to explain that to a lot of people.  But when your brain is wired the way mine is, you can't be any other way.
I'll focus here on names.  I love names.  I have an obsession with names.  Every doctor I've ever seen has asked me about names and every one has marveled at my knowledge about names.
I was four years old when I started writing down names.  The first name I remember is "Marcel."  I wrote over and over on scrap pieces of paper, all the names of the extended family members of my fictional Marcel.  I wrote all the names of all his friends and all their extended families.  I created thousands and thousands of lists.
When I was in the first grade, I started writing in notebooks.  Just lists.  List after list.
When I got a bit older, I started using Microsoft Excel and Word.

This, below, is a screenshot of one of the lists I just recently started.  It's just names.  Names, sorted into families.  It's all fiction.  It's all out of my head.

And here, the same type of list, but in Excel.  These are also sorted into families.  The only reason they're sorted into "families" is because I like associating names with each other.  Names don't belong alone.  Names fit best when they're part of a pattern.  So I like making up the names of members of fictional families.  You'll notice that this one is a screenshot that starts in the 500s.  So I've got over 500 rows above.  And you'll also note that the "surnames" are in alphabetical order.  I like alphabetical order.

I have hundreds and hundreds of files like this, plus many more on my parents' computers, plus notebooks and scraps of paper packed full of names.  

I know what the names mean.  I know the origin and etymology of the names.  I know what names are most common in which countries and which years.  I know what names are most uncommon in which countries and which years.  I know a lot about names.
